About the Matilija Mitts

The stitch pattern on these mitts reminded me of a flower, and one of my very favorite flowers is the Matilija Poppy. It is a gigantic plant native to the Ventura County area, and its blooms are big, white flowers with a sunny yellow center. The flowers show up every year in June, just as the summer is starting, and their petals flutter in the breeze.

These mitts are knit in a fingering-weight yarn and graded to three sizes. That’s so you can make sure they fit you just right and, hopefully, use up some leftovers. I’m a big fan of mitts for using up yarn left from knitting socks because mitts in my size only take about 35 g of yarn. If you need a little more, you can use a second yarn for contrasting ribbing at the wrist, fingertips, and thumb.

Mitts offer lots of opportunities for customizing your project! If you like these mitts, be sure to check out the Serenity Mitts and the Solace Mitts, too.

I cast on this Musselburgh Hat on Friday because I I cast on this Musselburgh Hat on Friday because I was going camping with a group of little Girl Scouts and I knew I wanted something I could knit in the dark around the campfire. I like having a project that is entirely stockinette so I don’t have to look at it but can still keep stitching.

How about you? Do you enjoy some simple stockinette knitting or does the tedium make you want to cry?
My options seem to be either arriving very early o My options seem to be either arriving very early or arriving late, so I’ll go with the former whenever I can. Luckily, knitting is portable and quiet, so I can take it with me into waiting rooms, offices, parking lots, pickup lines, wherever. I even took mine to Girl Scout camp last weekend 🤭
The Frontispiece Socks have the details shifted ov The Frontispiece Socks have the details shifted over to the sides. It’s a fun little twist on my usual texture placement. Have you cast on a pair yet?
I’ve been working on another scrappy project for a I’ve been working on another scrappy project for a little while now! This mitered square bag has been living in my imagination for months, but it took a while for me to have a gap in my knitting schedule where I could get it done. I needed to do a little experimenting, so I knew there would be some false starts here and there.

The tutorial is live now on my blog, though, and you can get the link easily just by commenting “bag” on this post. I’ll send you a DM with the link to the tutorial. It’ll cover yardage, gauge, scaling the size up and down, and assembly.
