A partially-finished pair of variegated pink and white socks sit on top of a small stack of books. A teacup is slightly blurred in the background. Yarn substitution helped me learn how to use different yarn for socks, sweaters, hats, and more.

Let’s talk about the yarn I used for these socks Let’s talk about the yarn I used for these socks! This is @purlsoho Fine Print, a 75% wool/25% nylon-polyamide blend.

Unlike a lot of yarns used for knitting socks, this one is sold in a 50 g ball, which makes it great for colorwork projects, smaller projects, or socks with a contrasting heel, cuff, and toe like I’ve done here.

I’ve collaborated with Purl Soho on a couple designs before and had been looking for a good project to work with them again. When I decided that this year’s sock club would have a pink color theme and realized they had a wonderful shade of pink in this yarn, that did it.

And golly, I sure do like how it turned out. #purlsoho #purlsohobusyhands
I was 37 when I started knitting this blanket. I’m 40 now. I think I might actually finish it by the time I’m 41!
I’ve seen a few posts from new knitters over the I’ve seen a few posts from new knitters over the years who buy a hank of yarn, don’t realize you can’t knit straight from the hank, and end up with a terrible mess on their hands. I don’t want that for you!

So here is how I take yarn from the hank that’s good for storage and shipping to a ball or cake that is good for actually knitting or crocheting.

And hello! Welcome to my messy desk! This is what it looks like in here when I am in full design mode. I had a new pattern come out over the weekend and I’m cranking along on three other designs, so things have been very busy and a little chaotic in here.

But if I’m honest, I’m always a little chaotic.

Thanks to @aimeeshermakes for sending me this gorgeous yarn!
I find it’s always helpful to know a few key dat I find it’s always helpful to know a few key data points before buying a knitting pattern. Here are three things I thought might be helpful for you before you get Great Big Ballgown!

Many sock knitters have a strong preference for a specific heel or toe. While it’s pretty common for sock knitters to substitute their preferred heel construction, if you’re not comfortable doing that, it’s helpful to know which heel I used in this pattern.

The sock pattern is available both on its own and as part of the Golden Honey Sock Club. The club is a significant cost savings over buying each pattern individually and includes a fifth pattern that will only ever be available to club members.

And don’t let those cables scare you! There are a lot of them, but they’re tiny, so you can do them without a cable needle. Just comment “tutorial” and I’ll send you a link.
