A Bee In The Bonnet

Author: Lauren Rad

I'm a former lawyer turned knitwear designer who designs soft, romantic patterns for knitters who want a brief escape from the everyday. When I'm not knitting, you can usually find me puttering about in my rose garden, hosting tea parties, or collecting sea glass at the beach.
A light green knit hat, a brown knit wrap, and a pair of peach knit socks are all displayed on the back of a chair. Each of the knit items has lots of different styles of cables.

There are over 27,000 of you here, and I realized There are over 27,000 of you here, and I realized it has been a long time since I introduced myself.

So hi! I’m Lauren. Here’s a little bit about the person behind all the knitting tutorials and handknit socks.

I hope you’ll stick around. We can talk books and the best sandwiches for tea parties.
I made a sock rainbow for Pride last year, but tho I made a sock rainbow for Pride last year, but those Creme Brulee socks had to do double duty as both orange and yellow, and that just won’t do. My friends deserve a proper rainbow.

So I knit the most aggressively, cheerfully yellow socks I could manage, and that felt good. This rainbow is much better.

Sending a great big hug to my LGBTQ+ friends. You are beautiful, you are loved, and you deserve all the good things. I’m so glad you’re here.

It’s June, which means warm weather for many of It’s June, which means warm weather for many of us in the Northern Hemisphere.* Some knitters might feel pressure to put the yarn away until winter, but knitting isn’t like skiing or ice-fishing. You don’t have to save it for the cold weather if you don’t want to.

And I don’t want to. Knitting helps me relax and focus. It makes me happy.

So I just make a few adjustments for summer weather and carry on. Here are some of the things I look for in summer projects. How about you?

*It’s actually kind of chilly and gray here every June because of the marine layer, but whatever, it’s still summer.
Or, to be more precise, the pattern for them has. Or, to be more precise, the pattern for them has. I have never had a sock pattern give me as much trouble as this one has!

It was originally slated for release in March, but after I sent the first version to my tech editor and we realized what a mess it was, I pushed it back.

We did another thorough round of edits to fix as many issues as we can, and then I knew it was going to need a really thorough test knit.

Thankfully, I have had an incredible team of folks working on the test knit for this pattern, and they have helped me iron out the kinks. We are finally nearing a point where I feel comfortable releasing this pattern into the world.

So mark your calendars. This pattern is coming in July. Hold me to it.

And note to self: never again do a pair of socks with both an all-over texture and mirrored side panels. It is a recipe for chaos.
