A Continuous Smell of Steam gets its name from a p A Continuous Smell of Steam gets its name from a passage in North and South where Fanny Thornton complains about how noisy and smoky Milton is. An industrial city in the 1850s is probably not where you’d want to wear this delicate white shawl, but the color and stitch pattern reminded me of billowing steam. I couldn’t help myself.

The pattern for this shawl is coming on June 5. I used two skeins of @aimeeshermakes Comfort Silk Linen (kindly provided as part of our collaboration) to knit my sample and had enough left over that I may make a matching little scarflet.

Are you ready to cast on yet or do you still need to pick out your yarn?

All my small accessory patterns, including the pattern for the Frontispiece Socks shown in these pictures, are currently on sale on Ravelry and Etsy through May 31. If you comment “sale,” I’ll send you a link to my Ravelry shop.

The sale doesn’t include pattern collections, which are already steeply discounted over the cost of buying the patterns individually. It also doesn’t include patterns published by others, like yarn companies or magazines.

I like to have a sale on small patterns at the beginning of summer, because I think these are the perfect summer knitting projects. They are small, portable, and not likely to overheat you.

Do you like to keep knitting during summer, or do you put the needles away until the weather cools down again?
