A Bee In The Bonnet

Author: Lauren Rad

I'm a former lawyer turned knitwear designer who designs soft, romantic patterns for knitters who want a brief escape from the everyday. When I'm not knitting, you can usually find me puttering about in my rose garden, hosting tea parties, or collecting sea glass at the beach.
A photo of a handknit blanket made with chunky acrylic yarn that has been draped across a white chair. The foreground and background are blurred. The middle is in focus and shows how well the yarn has held up over more than a decade of use.

How to Choose the Best Yarn for Blankets

A pair of lightly speckled, pale pink socks is laid flat on a white marble countertop. The socks have columns of eyelets and purl stitches. They're surrounded by roses and antique paper ephemera.

New Pattern Release: the Marriage of Convenience Socks

Woolen Spun Yarn, Worsted Spun Yarn, and Yarn Substitution

A side-by-side comparison of two swatches knit in a soft purple yarn. The swatch on the left shows a round toe knit from the cuff down using decreases for the shaping. The right swatch shows a round toe knit from the toe up using increases for the shaping.

A flatlay photo showing a tea cozy with lots of KFB increases on its bottom, some antique paper ephemera, white roses, a vintage doily, a plate with a slice of cake, three knitting swatches, and a teacup full of chamomile.

What is KFB in Knitting? Try this Easy Increase

A flatlay photo of a seafoam green knit shawl in progress, a finished pair of pink knit socks, and a barely started pair of light purple knit socks laid out on an antique table cloth with thick lace trim. Also in the image is an antique book with a gold and turquoise cover, a light blue Wedgwood bowl holding a ball of seafoam green yarn, a string of pearls, a crystal glass filled with water (it's very hot today), and a small carved shell brooch.

8 Knitting Myths Debunked

A flatlay photograph of a sweater vest in progress. It's tan and has lots of bobbles with rippling garter stitch. It's surrounded by white roses, a teacup full of chamomile, a lace handkerchief, and some antique paper ephemera.

Knitting Without Fear, from Beginner to Expert

A flatlay photo of a few skeins of medium-brown yarn, a ball of dark brown yarn, and some wooden circular needles with lots of dark brown stitches cast on to them. The needles are resting on a white lace antique doily with a carved shell brooch next to them.

This is not how I had anticipated my 2026 knitting This is not how I had anticipated my 2026 knitting adventures would go, but I’ve long since learned that when I’ve got a bee in the bonnet, there’s no sense in fighting it.

And now you all know where the business name came from 🤭
I am not kidding when I tell you I was very hot wh I am not kidding when I tell you I was very hot when I finished filming these videos, but it’s worth it! The 15 Knots Hat, in collaboration with @megsandco_yarn, is coming on Friday, July 24. It’s a fundraiser for my friend @sailingmom2la28’s Olympic campaign.

On my end, $2 from every pattern sale and all revenue from the blog post through the end of the KAL will be donated to the campaign. Megan will be donating 10% from the sales of the custom colorway she created for this collaboration.

Want to join the fun? Maker sure you’re on all of our newsletter lists so you don’t miss any announcements, and be sure to follow @sailingmom2la28 here on Instagram. She’s racing this week!
There’s no such thing as wasted time when you’re k There’s no such thing as wasted time when you’re knitting. No matter what happens, you get to learn things and build new skills. That’s true even if you have to start over again or you hate your finished project. You’ve still learned something, and what’s more, you’ve done it in a place where nobody’s going to get mad at you for not getting things right on the first try.
Want to help me send my friend to the Olympics? Th Want to help me send my friend to the Olympics? This hat is part of it! Here’s what’s happening.

My friend @sailingmom2la28 is making a run at the 2028 Olympics. She’s an incredible sailor who decided a couple years ago that she couldn’t live with the “what if” any longer. After deferring her dreams for 20 years, she’s back in the boat and chasing down her goal. She’s currently ranked 6th in North America, against competitors decades younger than she is.

But chasing an Olympic dream is expensive. There are boat charters, flights to regattas, coaching expenses, and so much more. That’s where we (and this hat!) come in.

I designed the 15 Knots Hat (named for Lauren’s favorite wind speed) to help raise funds for her campaign. @megsandco_yarn created this custom colorway inspired by Lauren’s logo and named it Second Wind, after Lauren’s racing team. We’re both going to be donating a portion of profits to the 501(c)(3) that helps fund Lauren’s campaign. More on that in an upcoming post because this is getting long already.

The pattern is coming on July 24. There’ll be a knitalong. Get ready, and let’s use our powers for good.
