yarn substitution

Yarn Review – Knit Picks Stroll

A top-down image of a pale yellow crocheted child's sweater with a pink knit child's sweater folded on top and a cream-colored ball of yarn. They're surrounded by a teacup full of coffee, a plate with tiny baked treats, and antique paper ephemera.

Why I Sometimes Choose Acrylic Yarn

A sideways photo of five balls of yarn in light blue, pale pink, white, a warm tan, and a cool tan. They are surrounded by dusty miller and a white teacup filled with coffee. The balls of yarn are in the middle of the photo, with dusty miller in the foreground and background, and the teacup slightly blurred in the background.

How to Choose the Best Sock Yarn

Two matching hats knit in fluffy tan yarn are laid flat on top of each other in a staggered fashion. They have seed stitch and columns of coin lace. They're surrounded by peach dahlias, white roses, two seashells, and spiky white coral.

Want to help me send my friend to the Olympics? Th Want to help me send my friend to the Olympics? This hat is part of it! Here’s what’s happening.

My friend @sailingmom2la28 is making a run at the 2028 Olympics. She’s an incredible sailor who decided a couple years ago that she couldn’t live with the “what if” any longer. After deferring her dreams for 20 years, she’s back in the boat and chasing down her goal. She’s currently ranked 6th in North America, against competitors decades younger than she is.

But chasing an Olympic dream is expensive. There are boat charters, flights to regattas, coaching expenses, and so much more. That’s where we (and this hat!) come in.

I designed the 15 Knots Hat (named for Lauren’s favorite wind speed) to help raise funds for her campaign. @megsandco_yarn created this custom colorway inspired by Lauren’s logo and named it Second Wind, after Lauren’s racing team. We’re both going to be donating a portion of profits to the 501(c)(3) that helps fund Lauren’s campaign. More on that in an upcoming post because this is getting long already.

The pattern is coming on July 24. There’ll be a knitalong. Get ready, and let’s use our powers for good.
I used to struggle terribly with second sock syndr I used to struggle terribly with second sock syndrome. In fact, for the first decade of my knitting life, I only finished a few pairs of socks.

But you wouldn’t know that from looking at my sock drawer now. Here are several tips and tricks that have helped me over the years.

How about you? Do you have other strategies I haven’t mentioned here yet?
It was hot and humid in the canyon where the @sbbo It was hot and humid in the canyon where the @sbbotanicgarden is located, but we cooled down under the trees and watched tadpoles in the stream. Outdoor knitting time is good for the soul, especially when there’s beautiful scenery involved.

And knitting under a giant, old oak tree is an extra special experience.
I was plagued by second sock syndrome until about I was plagued by second sock syndrome until about eight years ago, when a few little changes to my sock knitting setup made all the difference. If you’re having trouble finishing that second sock, just comment “blog,” and I’ll send you a link to my post with lots of potential solutions.

And if you’ve managed to get your SSS under control, I’d love to hear what worked for you!
