A Bee In The Bonnet

Author: Lauren Rad

I'm a former lawyer turned knitwear designer who designs soft, romantic patterns for knitters who want a brief escape from the everyday. When I'm not knitting, you can usually find me puttering about in my rose garden, hosting tea parties, or collecting sea glass at the beach.
A light blue wool cowl is draped around the neck and shoulders of a dressmaker's form. The cowl features alternating columns of bobbles and lacy leaves, with 1x1 ribbing along the top and bottom for stability.

New Pattern: Quercus Agrifolia Cowl

A top-down photo focused on a pair of handknit sock in progress. One sock is almost done and just needs the toes grafted, while the other is just ribbing on a small circular needle. The socks are a soft blue-green with hints of gray and feature a cabled panel around the front. They're surrounded by a pink teacup and saucer (with lots of milky tea in the cup), antique doilies, and peach and white roses.

Six Tips for Enjoying a Yarn Crawl

A flatlay photo of a pair of plain handknit socks. The socks are knit in a softly variegated pink and cream yarn, with contrasting cuff and toes in darker pink. The toes point to the right. The socks are surrounded by greenery, white flowers, and a white teacup filled with milky Earl Grey.

My Vanilla Sock Recipe

A flatlay photo of a pair of light gray handknit socks. The socks are laid flat on a gray surface with the toes pointing to the right. They're covered in tiny cables and eyelets, and surrounded by dusty miller, a blue and white teacup full of coffee, and a blue and white place with several croissants on it.

New Pattern: the Upwelling Socks

A top-down photo of the two pairs of socks featured in this post, one light blue and lacy, one with pink, white, and brown stripes. Both have had all their pills removed and look crisp and sharp again. Tucked in the middle between them is a blue and white teacup full of coffee and a white rose.

Shoes for Showing Off Handknit Socks: Six Suggestions

A pile of pastel handknit socks all laid out on a flat surface. There are pink, blue, light green, and caramel-colored socks jumbled up together.

While I am usually pretty comfortable dropping back and fixing mistakes, when I know there’s a possibility that I might need to rip back several rows or I’m working in a darker yarn where fixing mistakes can be a little more challenging, lifelines really live up to their name.

The pattern for these mittens designed in collaboration with @expressionfiberarts is coming early next month, and I’m really excited to share it with you! As always, they’re graded to multiple sizes and have instructions for how to lengthen the hand section to meet your unique hands’ fit needs.
I love a sock pattern filled with cables. Whether I love a sock pattern filled with cables. Whether they’re dainty things going down a central panel or more substantial cables wrapping the whole sock, I’m happy either way.

So here are ten of my favorites I’ve designed over the years. If you’re also a cabled sock fan, which one would you cast on first?

And if you comment “Socktober,” I’ll send you an easy roundup of links to each of these patterns on Ravelry.
