A Bee In The Bonnet

Author: Lauren Rad

I'm a former lawyer turned knitwear designer who designs soft, romantic patterns for knitters who want a brief escape from the everyday. When I'm not knitting, you can usually find me puttering about in my rose garden, hosting tea parties, or collecting sea glass at the beach.
Five children's books are laid out flat on a gray surface, surrounded by several white roses, some knitting projects, a teacup and saucer, and a couple antique doilies. The books are The Complete Brambly Hedge, Julia's House for Lost Creatures, Minou, Little Women, and Sam, Bangs, and Moonshine.

A pair of copper scissors with handles shaped like swans sits on a cream doily. On either side of the scissors are a pink sheath for the scissor blades and a tiny circular needle with the beginnings of a cream-colored sock on it.

A white woman's hands (mine!) knit on the front side of a piece of light blue lace knitting. The photo focuses in on how the lifeline is more visible when working on the front side of the yarn.

How to Knit With a Lifeline and Prevent Disasters

A white woman (me!) wearing a white poplin blouse with pintucks and lace trim works on knitting a multi-colored scrappy mitered square blanket. I'm knitting continental style, with the working yarn tensioned around my left hand.

A top-down photo of two pairs of handknit socks (pink and gray) and two pairs of store-bought socks (gray athletic socks and mid-calf socks with stripes of pink, white, and gray). They're surrounded by pink and yellow roses, a plaster intaglio, a brass key with a pink tassel, and a tiny silver tray with brass bulb pins in it.

How Hand-Knit Socks Helped Me Learn to Love My Store-Bought Socks

A pair of grayish-purple socks is laid out flat on a gray photo background, surrounded by antique paper ephemera and a white teacup full of espresso. This photo is shot slightly from the left and focuses on the sock that clearly shows the textured panel all the way down from cuff to toe.

New Knitting Pattern Release: A Good Grovel Socks

A top-down photo of a pair of light blue socks laid flat on an antique lace-trimmed placemat. The socks have columns of purls running up and down the legs and are pointing to the left. They are surrounded by antique postcards with blue flowers on them, a brass key with a pale pink tassel, and a silver tray full of brass bulb pins.

This has been such a fun month, and I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have! I look forward to Socktober every year because it’s a fun excuse to do some deep dives into the wonderful world of sock knitting.

If you had told me back in 2008, when I knit my first socks, that eventually I’d become slightly obsessed with them, well… I probably would have been confused by that information.

But here we are, 17 years later, and I really, really love knitting socks. I love thinking about socks. I hope you’re not sick of hearing about socks from me just yet.
Went to visit my brother and took him to his very Went to visit my brother and took him to his very first LYS (thanks to @yarnphoriapa and little Mabel for making us feel so welcome!). We ate a lot and walked all over and went to the Franklin Institute and wandered through the Free Library. It was just what I needed.
