A Bee In The Bonnet

Author: Lauren Rad

I'm a former lawyer turned knitwear designer who designs soft, romantic patterns for knitters who want a brief escape from the everyday. When I'm not knitting, you can usually find me puttering about in my rose garden, hosting tea parties, or collecting sea glass at the beach.
A woman's small, plump hands are splayed slightly on a white countertop. They're wearing a pair of brown fingerless mitts with panels of coin lace and little bobbles down the back of the hands. Around them are some peach and cream roses and antique paper ephemera. A teacup full of tea sits to the left, slightly cropped out.

The Campestral Mitts

A woman's small, plump hands are splayed slightly on a white countertop. They're wearing a pair of light blue fingerless mitts with panels of lace and seed stitch down the back of the hands. Around them are lots of peach and cream roses. A teacup full of tea sits at the top of the photo.

Two flatlays next to each other. On the left is a flatlay that seems like a random jumble of items together. On the right is a a flatlay that is arranged more intentionally, has better control of light flow, and uses a balanced color palette.

Come Take a Flatlay Workshop with Me!

A pink and cream hat composed entirely of mitered squares is laid flat on a textured gray surface. It's surrounded by a gold and white teacup full of tea, white roses, antique paper ephemera, two cakes of leftover yarn in the same colors as the hat, and a mitered square in progress on two tiny steel needles.

A top-down photo of two handknit socks in gray with teal and purple speckles. They feature columns of coin lace and slipped stitches for lots of texture. The toes are pointing to the left. They're surrounded by pink roses, antique paper ephemera, and a white teacup and saucer full of milky tea.

A top-down image of a flatlay on a white marble countertop. In the center is a blue knit baby bonnet. The bonnet has red ribbing around the brim and white scalloped crochet trim. There is white and red roosimine and French knot detailing just above the ribbed brim. The bonnet is surrounded by leftover skeins of yarn, antique paper ephemera, and a gold and white teacup full of tea.

The Gift of the Fall Flush

A top-down image of a light blue swatch knit in Knit Picks Stroll, along with a pair of fingerless mitts knit in the same yarn and a ball of leftover yarn. They are surrounded by white roses, antique paper ephemera, and a teacup full of tea.

Yarn Review – Knit Picks Stroll

A white woman with short gray hair smiles in the sunshine. She is wearing a red, long-sleeved shirt and has reading glasses perched on top of her head. In her hands is a large basket full of colorful yarn dyed using natural materials.

When I sat down to design Illustrated Couple, I kn When I sat down to design Illustrated Couple, I knew I wanted to include some design details that were a little easier for newer sock knitters. The toe shape was an easy choice.

That’s because for beginners, I always recommend the round toe. It has a few special characteristics that make it especially good for learning.

And bonus: it’s really cute, too.

No, no. Shh. I’m counting.
One of the coolest things about knitting is how in One of the coolest things about knitting is how infinitely customizable it is. Each of these socks uses a different toe construction for a slightly different fit.

How about you? Do you like round toe, wedge toe, star toe, something else?

Now, as the mother of a 9-year-old girl, I’m horrified by how she snuck out in the dead of night to steal a horse. Child! What were you doing?!

Anyway. Here’s a fun look at what kind of knitting needles she would have been using to knit her socks.
